Can I get a personal loan with no credit history?

In short

Yes, but from fewer lenders and usually on tighter terms: with no file to score, a lender looks at your salary credits, employer and bank statements instead, and many prefer to start you on a smaller amount or a card. Six months of any credit paid on time, even a small one, turns no history into a score, and that opens the wider market.

What no credit history actually means

If you have never held a loan or a credit card, the bureaus have no accounts to score, and your file comes back marked new-to-credit rather than with a number. It is not a bad score; it is an unknown. Lenders, though, price unknown as risk, which is why the first loan is the hardest one to get and the most expensive one to hold.

Who lends to new-to-credit borrowers

Mostly lenders that can see your income directly. The bank that holds your salary account already watches your credits every month and is often the first to offer a card or a small loan. Some NBFCs underwrite salaried applicants on bank statements and employer category instead of a bureau score, usually for smaller amounts and shorter tenures. Secured options — a credit card or a loan against a fixed deposit — are open to almost anyone with the deposit.

What a lender checks instead

With no score, the lender rebuilds the same picture from the raw material.

  • Salary credits over the last six to twelve months: regular, from a named employer.
  • The employer itself, and how long you have been there.
  • Existing EMIs — none, in this case — and rent or other fixed outgoings.
  • Bank-account behaviour: bounces, minimum-balance penalties, a balance that never reaches zero.
  • A stable address and clean KYC; sometimes a co-applicant with a file of their own.

The fastest honest way to build a file

It takes about six months and very little money.

  • Take a card or a small loan you will actually use — a card against a fixed deposit is the easiest to get.
  • Use a little of the limit and pay the full bill on time every month; the on-time record is the entire point.
  • Apply to one place, not five. Each application is a hard enquiry recorded on your new file.
  • Wait for two or three reporting cycles, then check the file; by then a number appears.

What to avoid

Any app that promises a loan with no check at all is either unregulated or about to charge you for the privilege. Never pay a processing fee before disbursal to get an offer; under RBI's digital-lending rules a regulated lender disburses to your own account and the fee, if any, is stated on the Key Fact Statement. And do not become a guarantor for someone else's loan to build history; it builds their file and your liability.

Where Finsa stands

The first thing to know is whether you have a file at all, and the Finsa check tells you that plainly. Checking your report through Finsa is a soft enquiry, which only you can see and which does not affect your score. Finsa is not a lender: it reads your report with your consent and puts your profile in front of RBI-regulated banks and NBFCs, who decide eligibility, rate and approval. If the report is empty, the steps above are the way in; if there is a file, lenders can look at it.

People also ask

Does no credit history mean a zero score?
No. The bureau reports the file as new-to-credit instead of scoring it. A zero, or a very low number, means a history of missed payments, which is a different and worse position.
Can a student get a personal loan?
Rarely without income. A card against a fixed deposit, or a co-applicant with income and a file, is the usual route; an education loan is a separate product with its own rules.
How do I get a CIBIL score for the first time?
Hold any credit — a card against a fixed deposit is the easiest — and pay it in full on time for about six months. The bureaus score a file once there is a repayment pattern to score; there is no way to buy or apply for a first score.
How long does it take to get a credit score?
Usually about six months of an account being reported — long enough for the bureau to see a pattern of on-time payments.
