Which personal loan app is safe to use in India?

In short

A safe personal loan app is one where the money comes from a named RBI-regulated bank or NBFC straight into your account, you get that lender's Key Fact Statement before signing, nobody asks you for a fee up front, and the app names a grievance officer and stores your data in India. Those are RBI's own rules for digital lending, and any app — including Finsa — can be checked against them in two minutes.

Updated 9 September 2026 · by Finsa, a Lending Service Provider — not a lender.

What "RBI approved loan app" actually means

Nothing, strictly. RBI does not approve, register or license apps. It licenses lenders — banks and NBFCs — and since 2025 it requires each of those lenders to report every app it lends through, its own and its agents', to a directory RBI publishes. So the honest question is not "is this app RBI approved" but "which RBI-regulated lender is behind this app, and does that lender list it". An app that cannot name its lender has already failed.

The other honest phrase is Lending Service Provider: the RBI term for a company like Finsa that works as an agent of regulated lenders — finding borrowers, showing offers, helping with paperwork — without lending itself. LSPs are not licensed; the lender they work for answers to RBI for them.

The six checks

Each one is a rule from RBI's Digital Lending Directions, 2025, so a regulated arrangement passes all six by construction.

A safe loan app, checked against RBI's rules
Who lendsA named RBI-regulated bank or NBFC, stated on the app and the website — not "our partners" with no names
Where the money goesStraight from the lender to your bank account; never via the app's or an agent's account
What you signA Key Fact Statement from the lender with APR, every fee and the repayment schedule, before signing
What you pay the appNothing. A fee due to an agent is paid by the lender, and asking the borrower for money before disbursal is the surest sign of fraud
Who you complain toA named grievance officer with an email on the website, and escalation to RBI's Ombudsman after 30 days
What it takes from your phoneOnly what the loan needs, with consent, stored in India. An app demanding contacts, photos or call logs is breaking the rules

Red flags that end the conversation

Any one of these is enough to uninstall.

  • A processing or verification fee asked before the loan is paid out.
  • Money arriving from an individual's account, or from a name that isn't the lender's.
  • No Key Fact Statement, or one that arrives after you have signed.
  • Pressure tactics — a countdown, a limited quota, a rate that is only good today.
  • Contact-list access, and later, calls to those contacts. This is the pattern behind every loan-app harassment story.

Safe is not the same as cheap

Passing the checklist tells you an app is regulated, not that its offer is good. Regulated lenders differ on rate by several percentage points for the same profile, which is why a marketplace that shows several offers side by side, each with its Key Fact Statement, is the way to be both safe and well-priced. Compare offers on the annual percentage rate, and let the lenders know you are comparing.

Where Finsa stands on the six checks

Finsa is not a lender: it reads your report with your consent and puts your profile in front of RBI-regulated banks and NBFCs, who decide eligibility, rate and approval. The offers name the lender and carry its Key Fact Statement; the lender disburses to your bank account; Finsa charges no processing fee and no fee of any kind; the grievance officer, the legal entity and the data-residency commitment are on the About page; the credit check is a soft enquiry after your explicit consent. Checking your report through Finsa is a soft enquiry, which only you can see and which does not affect your score.

People also ask

Is there an RBI approved loan app list?
There is a directory RBI publishes of digital lending apps reported by regulated lenders, under its 2025 Directions. It lists apps lenders vouch for; it is not an approval. Check the lender behind an app first, then whether that lender lists it.

Is Finsa a safe loan app?
Judge it by the six checks rather than by us saying so: named RBI-regulated lenders, disbursal to your own account, a Key Fact Statement from the lender, no fee to the borrower, a named grievance officer, data stored in India. All six are stated on finsa.app/about.
How do I report a fraudulent loan app?
Report it on the National Cyber Crime portal at cybercrime.gov.in or by calling 1930, and to the app store it came from. If a regulated lender is behind it, its grievance officer and then RBI's Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
